How Smartie stays accurate
Smartie answers only from authored Smarter SMSF content and approved reference material inside a controlled Microsoft CoPilot Studio environment. It doesn't browse the open internet and it doesn't invent answers — if it can't ground a response in approved source material, it escalates rather than guesses.
That design choice is the whole point of Smartie, and it's what separates it from a general-purpose AI assistant. This article explains how it works and what it means for the way you use the answers.
A closed, curated knowledge base
General AI assistants draw on the open internet. That's exactly why they're unreliable on technical SMSF questions: the internet is full of outdated caps, superseded ATO positions and confidently wrong commentary.
Smartie works the other way around. Its knowledge base contains only:
- Fully authored Smarter SMSF technical content — the same material behind our CPD, education and document services
- Approved reference material, including relevant legislation and ATO guidance
That library is maintained by the Smarter SMSF technical team and kept aligned with evolving SMSF regulation and ATO guidance. Nothing enters it without being authored or approved first.
Grounded answers, with the references shown
Smartie is built to answer from that content rather than from general knowledge about superannuation. Answers include the regulatory references behind them, so you can trace the reasoning to source instead of taking a conclusion on trust.
Behind the scenes, an orchestration layer sits between your question and the response, designed specifically to constrain Smartie to its approved sources and minimise confabulation. In practice you'll notice this as a narrower, more careful assistant than a general chatbot — which is the intention.
Date-sensitive law is handled deliberately
Superannuation law changes constantly, and much of it is date-effective — caps, thresholds and reporting obligations differ by financial year. Smartie is instructed to be explicit about which year a rule applies to.
You can help it considerably by naming the financial year in your question. "In 2026–27…" removes any ambiguity about which settings apply.
Escalation instead of guessing
The most important guardrail is what happens when Smartie reaches the edge of what it knows. Rather than producing a plausible-sounding answer, it tells you it can't answer — and automatically logs a support ticket to the Smarter SMSF technical team.
You don't need to raise it separately. A human technical specialist picks it up and comes back to you.
Expect this on genuinely novel, unsettled or highly unusual questions. It isn't a failure — it's the system working as designed, and it's the reason you can rely on the answers it does give.
Security and privacy controls
Smartie runs on Microsoft CoPilot Studio's enterprise-grade infrastructure, within a controlled environment:
- Zero Trust architecture and Data Loss Prevention policies enforced at the platform level
- Enterprise-grade encryption of data in transit and at rest
- No client personally identifiable information in the knowledge base
- Domain-restricted scope — Smartie answers SMSF and superannuation questions and declines to range beyond them
A practical note on your own inputs: describe scenarios using the facts that drive the technical answer — ages, balances, dates, structures — rather than client names or identifying details. You'll get the same quality of answer, and it's better practice.
Human oversight
Smartie sits inside a human-in-the-loop model, not outside one. The technical team authors the content, maintains it as the law changes, curates the Playbook prompts, and handles every escalated question. Smartie makes that expertise faster to reach — it doesn't operate independently of it.
What this means for how you use the answers
Smartie is a technical support tool, designed to enhance rather than replace professional judgement. It does not provide licensed financial advice. So:
- Verify against current legislation before relying on an answer — particularly on recently amended provisions. Every response carries this reminder for good reason.
- Check the facts fit your client. Smartie answers the scenario you described. If a material fact was left out, the answer will reflect that.
- Treat exported text as a draft. Content bound for a file note, SoA or client email is your work product once it leaves your firm, and your professional obligations apply to it in full.
- Apply your own judgement to strategy. Smartie is strong on what the rules require. What's right for a particular client remains yours to determine.
